It is simple question to answer Network means association of individuals having a common interest. Marketing is the act of buying or selling in the market. If you put the two together it is individuals having common interest in buying or selling something in the market.
Many people get involved in Network Marketing in hopes for magic. There is no magic of earning thousands of dollars a month. It takes a skill and it doesn't happen over night.
